Putting the Spotlight on Jody Bigfoot

Jody Bigfoot is an anomaly and a renegade in life and in art. His debut solo project Duszt challenges tropes and preconceptions of contemporary hip hop whilst building on the political roots of the genre with a refreshing addition of spiritual esotericism and eastern philosophy. Duszt the album is accompanied and complimented by a feature-length music video filmed in Japan where Bigfoot previously lived for a year (2011-2012) honing his video editing craft. The movie itself is funded, directed, edited and produced by himself with the assistance of one cameraman as well as being brought to life by the music production skills and instrumental talent of German prodigy Tandaro.

Born at home to a pair of socialist vegetarians, Jody Bigfoot has always stood out from the crowd, standing at two meters tall with size 15 shoes, this is both literal and figurative! After playing a leading role in the local anti Iraq war movement and attending the largest protest in history to no avail, he became disillusioned with conventional forms of protest. Equally fed up with mainstream education and English hedonism he spent most of his twenties traveling and working in any country he could get a visa, doing anything from packing cow hides in Australia to climbing and dismantling 250 foot trees in ancient Canadian rainforest.

Bigfoot experienced a spiritual epiphany listening to New Zealand reggae and Maori roots band Trinity Roots, which convinced him that the way forward was to spread this positivity and emotion through music. That seminal moment provided the inspiration behind the moniker of Trinity Lo Fi, a group he spearheaded alongside Zico MC spawning five albums and five EPs in a prodigious five year stint. After exhausting the extremely niche genre of 8-bit reggae hip hop, Bigfoot has gone solo and is exploring more accessible genres. Initially focusing on adding an instrumental, artistic and conscious flare to trap music as well as working with Konchis’ unique hip hop beats alongside Nobull (of North East local legends Verbal Terrorists) with a new group Lucid Giants, whose debut album Artificial Ignorance launches later in 2020. The wandering Sasquatch is ready to make the vanguard of music with a message his permanent home.

A quick interview

By John Palmer

How would you describe your music?

My music is simply me taking the baton passed to me by great artists that helped me become a better person and trying to pass the philosophy and experience onto the world.

How long have you been making music for and what led you to start?

Half my life, on and off (16 years) and I started because music made me feel things that the schooling system didn’t.

What made you decide to study English Literature and Creative Writing?

I have now decided to be an author, as I think the extent and amount of ideas I have these days are impossible to fit into rap form. A lot of my new ideas are narrative based, and although I do intend to fit some into the rap medium, others need a 400-500 page book to get out!

Do you think your time in Japan influenced your creative style?

Yes, definitely. The juxtaposition in Japan of complete systematic obedience alongside a wild and whacky underground is incredibly inspiring.

What creative projects are you working on at the moment?

I have just started my first novel and intend to start chipping away at all of my synopsis ideas that have built up behind a dam of complacency and lack of discipline.

Dust on a rock in an orbit, entrusted with rock by the gods we imported

Dust on a rock in an orbit, war scorched up the rock as we tortured

Dust on a rock in an orbit, destined to rust on the rock if it’s thoughtless

Dust on a rock in an orbit, searching for rocks to inhabit wida war ship

And they went into final frontier

A destiny set to be starting a new

Through the vacuum of space

Didn’t ask to be chased

But their shadows are following soon

Can they ever run from

What they’ve become and they’ve done in their slumber?

Can it ever be undone?

Humanity on earth in a trance of the blunders

Man and mistakes one and the same

Lightning and thunder, making me wonder

Will a new land wida new plan

Ever be a paradise wida scars on our lumber?

Huh…typical man

Thinks he can fix up the problems at hand

By flying to planets escaping the damage

That ravages earth and is killing the land

Dust on a rock in an orbit, entrusted with rock by the gods we imported

Dust on a rock in an orbit, war scorched up the rock as we tortured

Dust on a rock in an orbit, destined to rust on the rock if it’s thoughtless

Dust on a rock in an orbit, searching for rocks to inhabit wida war ship

We think we are gods in the image of the one

But we, don’t cry for the life that is lost

Hindsight strikes, time it is gone

And we can’t live here so we try move on

Into the matrix out into space wid

So many problems nobody’s facing

Taken with, in our minds and our spaceship

We be stuck to the shadows we created

Do you love do you lust

Do you know what we’re marching amongst

Have ya been sucked in by the stuff

Dya think that ya more than the dust?

But you are just dust, trust

And you will return to the crust

Everything burns and everything rusts

Everything dies and everything’s dust

Dust on a rock in an orbit, entrusted with rock by the gods we imported

Dust on a rock in an orbit, war scorched up the rock as we tortured

Dust on a rock in an orbit, destined to rust on the rock if it’s thoughtless

Dust on a rock in an orbit, searching for rocks to inhabit wida war ship

More rocks to be conquered

Wida conquest get what we wanted

Space has affronted our strengths and the lengths

That we’ve come to undo the gravity onwards

Upwards, away from the past

Running from mistakes and the planet that we crashed

A planet that we cashed in tortured and smashed

Boarding escape ships whose gonna blast off?

Genetics that are favoured

Arian race has ever been savoured

Wida colony of bots for the labour

The rich play god play maker

Every big act will die

But stars and the moon still shine in a sky

And we’re stuck here watching them fly to the night

Left in the wake of the profit and the pride

Dust on a rock in an orbit

Entrusted with rock by the gods we imported

Dust on a rock in an orbit

War scorched up the rock as we tortured

Dust on a rock in an orbit

Destined to rust on the rock if it’s thoughtless

Dust on a rock in an orbit

Searching for rocks to inhabit wida war ship
